Monoculture!!

The speed at which we are destroying the biodiversity on this planet is going to leave us alone pretty soon! The unprecedented growth of human population is taking up more and more space making the other species to run away, die, or leave their habitats. We have the highest rate of species extinction at this point. Fragmentation, deforestation, urban explosion and habitat destruction are some of the terms we should be watchful for!

If we are the smartest species on this planet; does it mean that we have some special rights to kill every other living thing? Are we saying that the other species do not have the rights like us, they are dispensable? How can we live on this planet in harmony with the other species? How can we use the same philosophy for the other creatures and say, “Live and let live”.

i'm not an expert on this issue, but i see the importance of preserving biodiversity and keystone species on this planet. it's so sad to think, that given the natural gifts we've been endowed, we have just used it to decimate the planet in more ways than one, instead of bettering the world. most of the species that are endangered or extinct owe the very fact that they're in this precarious situation to us, human beings.
it seems there is hope that the extinction of dominant species can bring about good things. for instance, the dinosaur gave way to the development of human beings. but dinosaurs haven't cleared away acres and acres of animal habitat or dumped toxins into the oceans.
i think if humans disappear off the face of this planet for good, we'll have already taken all of the species with us. what with rising human populations and consumerism, this danger doesn't seem that far off when you think about it.
as we destroy the wilderness, and in turn destroy biodiversity, these things will start to take a toll on us. we're already dealing with soil erosion on beaches and global warming, melting of ice and glaciers, etc.
i shudder to think at what will be next.

I completely agree. We as humans are hypocrites. We say live and let live, but we don't REALLY live it. We pretty much screw up the world for every other species, destroy natural resources, demolish their habitats for development, and eat up EVERYTHING.
Over by my old house, there used to be an open field. My sister and I used to play in that field and we'd see field mice, wild cats, a wild boar one time (REALLY scary), rabbits, gophers, birds, etc. We actually buried our dead bunny Cuddles in that field. Since we moved back to Bakersfield, that field is now a neighborhood. So where did those animals go? They're living in people's backyards, 'destroying' landscapes, 'eating' flowers, being 'pests'. Aren't we the ones that destroyed their homes in the first place?!?!? Shoot, we totally deserve this, if we took their habitat in the first place. To make up for the idiotic mistake the housing company made, I promise never to kill another gopher or mouse or rabbit in my yard. Ever. Stupid Crisp & Cole....
